Whether you are independently wealthy or not, funding your education should be a GOOD investment, not a risky one. However, not all colleges and not all degrees will give you a positive return on your investment. Navigating this delicate balance without a crystal ball may seem impossible. However, there is a formula. Plan Higher Ed assists students with determining career salary projections, researching programs to support career goals, finding scholarship options, and creatively allocating money to pay for education.
Two or Four Year Degree and Beyond: Colleges and universities are not one in the same, although many people use the terms interchangeably. Colleges are typically smaller schools with different types of resources and more personalized attention. Universities are often research-based, have more resources, and offer less personalized attention to their undergraduates. You may even find distinct colleges within a university. It is personal preference and goals that will make one more appealing than the other.
Two Year Degrees, Transfers, and Certificate Programs: Some people attend community college for the convenience of being able to still live at home while commuting to school. Others like the idea of getting used to college life at a smaller school before transferring to a four-year institution. From a financial standpoint and educational style choice, community college is often a very good return on investment. Where it can lack are dormitory options, athletics, clubs, or highly experienced professors. Not all community colleges are the same and it is worth it to check out your options if you feel this could be an option for you.
Skill Trades and Vocations: As you have probably seen in the news, trade school enrollment is on the rise and businesses are seeking skilled workers. From skilled plumber to commercial airline pilots, trade schools are producing skilled laborers, technical tradespeople and educated entrepreneurs. Skilled trades workers are highly sought after and often paid accordingly. Trade schools are typically 21 months in length, but can vary depending on the program and certifications.
Education From Anywhere: Since 2020, remote education has gained exponential momentum. It meets the needs of many types of students all at once. Today, you can get an education 100% online resulting in degrees from many of the top-rated universities and colleges.
Colleges utilize one or several platforms for their applicants. The most widely used platforms are Common App, Coalition, or their State School Site. All colleges will post their application options on their admissions web-page. Often the applications for transfer students are different and can easily be confused.
Aside from the application questions, applicants will often need to provide documents such as high school transcripts, letters of recommendation, portfolios, and essays. High School Guidance office staff should provide the school's protocol on how to obtain these documents.
If you are not a self-directed person, I strongly suggest becoming one or seeking assistance for this process. There are deadlines that must be met in order to reach your goals. Missing deadlines can result in more expenses in the long run.
Our College Concierge Services can provide you with as little or as much assistance as you need throughout this process. We have options for all budgets.
